In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability and cultural preservation, Edirne, a city famed for its rich historical and cultural heritage, has taken a significant step by installing solar energy systems to illuminate two of its iconic bridges, Bayezid II and Yalnızgöz. This initiative not only sheds light on the architectural marvels of the past but also paves the way for the eco-friendly lighting of 12 other historic bridges spanning the Tunca and Meriç rivers.
Historical Bridges Meet Modern Technology
The Bayezid II and Yalnızgöz bridges, integral to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic in Edirne, have been outfitted with 59 wall-mounted steel-bodied photovoltaic solar panels and lighting fixtures. This innovative project is anticipated to conserve up to 20 kilowatts of energy per hour, showcasing a remarkable fusion of modern technology with ancient architecture.
