Global smartphone market drops to lowest shipment level in last 10 years

Research company Canalys announced that last year, the global smartphone market was the lowest shipment period of the last 10 years.

The declines in global smartphone sales and shipments continue to increase day by day. Canalys has also released a new report on the global smartphone market.

According to the published report, the fourth quarter of 2022 was the worst-performing annual and fourth quarter of the last ten years. Although shipments decreased throughout the year, it was announced that there was no change in the ranking of the shipping brands.

The report states that worldwide smartphone shipments fell 17% year-on-year in Q4 2022. The overall year-on-year decline is said to be 11%. In 2022, less than 1.2 billion smartphones were shipped worldwide. Although Apple came first in the last quarter of 2022, it was announced that Samsung was the market leader for the whole year. Third, fourth and fifth places were taken by Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, respectively.

Canalys Analyst Runar Bjørhovde says the challenging macroeconomic environment throughout 2022 is causing smartphone shipments to decline. Demand for low and mid-range segments fell sharply in previous quarters. Even the demand for the flagship segment started to show weakness in Q4 of 2022.

The lack of any innovative innovations in smartphones for a long time is also among the reasons for this. In the past, different new features were announced in smartphone launches, but nowadays, smartphones with almost the same features come up with only renewed and similar designs.

According to Canalys Analyst Le Xuan Chiew, brands will be cautious about 2023 by prioritizing profitability and maintaining market share. They are already reducing costs to adapt to the new market reality. A strong relationship between channel partners and vendors will be important to maintain their market share.

Canalys forecasts flat to marginal growth for the global smartphone market in 2023. While markets such as Western Europe and North America are affected by economic slowdowns, some regions in Southeast Asia may grow in the second half of 2023.
