İşbank makes landmark move with first-ever domestic green debt instrument issuance in Turkish lira

İşbank successfully issued green bonds totaling TL 500 million, with a two-year maturity period. The transaction marked a historic milestone as the banking sector in Türkiye issued its first-ever green debt instrument in Turkish lira.

The funds from the issuance will be allocated to finance loans for green projects.

The evolution of green and sustainable debt instruments holds a crucial role in financing a sustainable future. With this approach, İşbank has achieved the distinction of being the first bank in Türkiye to issue green debt instruments in Turkish lira, aligning with the principles outlined in the “Guidelines on Green Debt Instruments, Sustainable Debt Instruments, Green Lease Certificates and Sustainable Lease Certificates” established by the Capital Markets Board (CMB).

The size of the issuance, facilitated through sales to qualified investors in Türkiye,reached TL 500 million, driven by strong interest from both retail and institutional investors. The funds from the issuance will be allocated to finance loans for green projects.

İşbank CEO Hakan Aran emphasized the significance of sustainability-themed medium and long-term fund provision as an integral element of their strategic objectives, highlighting the adoption of an end-to-end business model, encompassing fund provision and extending to the delivery of these funds to customers through sustainable products and services in the ongoing battle against climate change. Hakan Aran stated, “We will continue to allocate the funds acquired through our pioneering domestic green bond issuance, the first of its kind in the sector, aligning with our commitment to serve as a guiding business partner in our customers’ journey of green transformation.”

İşbank enhances transaction diversity in its sustainable fund offerings

İşbank will continue to enhance its transaction diversity with the issuance of TL-denominated green bonds, thereby expanding its contributions to sustainable finance. This initiative complements existing avenues, including loans provided through bilateral agreements, syndication, securitization, Eurobond issuance, and treasury transactions.
