Turkiye: March record in automobile sales

The automobile and light commercial vehicle market grew by 61.7% last month compared to March of the previous year and became 103 thousand 929 units, making this the best March of all time.

According to the March data of the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), total sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkiye increased by 55.2% in the January-March period of 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year, and amounted to 235 thousand 971.

In the January-March period of 2023, automobile sales increased by 50.1% compared to the previous year and reached 175 thousand 421, while light commercial vehicle sales increased by 71.9% to 60 thousand 550 units.

Looking at the month of March of this year, the sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles increased by 61.7% compared to March 2022 and amounted to 103 thousand 929.

In March, automobile sales increased by 57.9% compared to the same month of the previous year and became 79 thousand 226, while light commercial vehicle sales increased by 75.3% to 24 thousand 703 units. This was recorded as the highest March of all time.

The automobile and light commercial vehicle market grew by 50% compared to the 10-year average sales in March. While the automobile market grew by 47.9% compared to the average 10-year March sales, the light commercial vehicle market grew by 57.4% compared to the 10-year March average sales.

Sales by segment and body types

When the automobile market is evaluated by segments in the January-March 2023 period, 89.1% of the market was composed of vehicles in the A, B and C segments with low tax rates. C-segment cars received a 53.6% share with 93 thousand 990 units, while B-segment cars received a 34.7% share with 60 thousand 870 units.

When the automobile market is evaluated according to body types, the most preferred body type was SUV cars with a share of 46.6%, with 81 thousand 788 units. SUVs were followed by sedans with a 29.95 share and 52 thousand 430 sales, and hatchbacks with a 21.3% share and 37 thousand 282 sales.

In the said period, automatic transmission cars took a 73.2% share from the sales with 128,403 units, while the share of manual transmission cars took a 26,8% share with 47,18 units.

According to the body type in the light commercial vehicle market, the van body type was the most preferred body type with a share of 83%, the van body type took the second place with a share of 6.7%, and the minibus body type took the third place with a share of 6.1%.
