Air and Space Vehicles Design Laboratory was opened at ITU

The Air and Space Vehicles Design Laboratory was opened at ITU. TUSAS (TAI) General Manager Temel Kotil said, “PLM is a new concept in design. There is a very new world. We live it in TAI. We teach this system to zero kilometer engineers. This system is a cultural transformation. Doing something electronically from A to Z.”. ITU Rector Prof. Dr. Ismail Koyuncu: “In our newly established laboratory, our students will be able to get to know and learn the PLM program, which is the Siemens software used in companies such as Boeing, Rolls-Royce, TAI, as well as the most up-to-date engineering software, so it will be possible for them to start their professional life more equipped and knowledgeable.”

Air and Space Vehicles Design Laboratory was opened at the Faculty of Aeronautics and Space Sciences in Istanbul Technical University Maslak Campus. TUSAS (Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc.) General Manager Temel Kotil, ITU Rector Osman Koyuncu, Dean of the Faculty of Aeronautics and Space Sciences Prof. Dr. Zahit Mecitoglu and many faculty members attended the opening at the faculty. While it was learned that PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) technology was used in the computers in the laboratory, TAI General Manager Temel Kotil gave information about this technology. Saying that as TAI, they follow all new methods related to design and manufacturing, Kotil stated that the newest technology is used in this laboratory as well, and emphasized the importance of the laboratory.

PLM TECHNOLOGY IS USED IN THE LABORATORY

Temel Kotil, who gave information about the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) technology used in the Air and Space Vehicles Design Laboratory opened in ITU, said, “There are very new methods in design and manufacturing in the world. As TAI, we follow them closely. Product Lifecycle Management, which we call PLM, means monitoring a product in a digital environment with its digital twin, while it continues in the customer’s hands from the idea stage to the customer’s hand. For example, when the landing gear of an airplane goes down physically, it can land in the same way in the digital environment. Let’s say a car is built, it’s being driven on the highway. If he has a digital twin here, he is being driven electronically here too. With everything, the engine is running, generating electricity, releasing gas. That’s what PLM means. Therefore, in the new world, new concepts are carried out very quickly, from the idea to the production of a product, to the maintenance of the customer after manufacturing. Ten times faster. In the normal classical method, each engineer designs something and these are further combined. The things that everyone is doing here go to the pool at the same time and merge. In short, it’s a very new technology.”

KOTIL EXPLAINED THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LABORATORY

Expressing that the PLM used in the laboratory is an extremely new and fast technology, Kotil said, “Well, what is the importance of this laboratory? We got into the university with this. ITU Faculty of Aircraft, I hope other faculties will develop later, and fellow students will be developed with very new technologies. Therefore, they will grow from the very beginning. In the new world, classical events lost their importance. Because computers are very fast, software is more comprehensive, not like engineering in my youth. The new generation needs to see it first hand, in its latest form in the world. That’s why this lab is so different. This is not a computer laboratory, it is a laboratory supported by TAI with its infrastructure and human resources. Here, 20 students will be able to work at the same time and apply what they have learned in the same way wherever they go in the world. Students at ITU Faculty of Aeronautics will see here what they would see if they had studied at MIT or worked at BOEING. We are already doing this at TAI. Here we come to the student’s feet, after all, they will come to us. We recruit and train about a thousand engineers a year. But now they will start here. I hope it will be an advantage for the whole of Turkey.”

ITU RECTOR THANKS TO TAI FOR COOPERATION

Speaking at the opening, ITU Rector Ismail Koyuncu said, “Many projects such as national combat aircraft and helicopters are running simultaneously in our country. We need to give them all kinds of support in terms of personnel. Of course, we need to give this support as trained and ready personnel. Hopefully, the laboratory that we will open today will make this contribution to us in this sense. Our cooperation with TAI is not limited to this laboratory. Currently, there are many projects that we carry out with TAI, be it in the sense of consulting with our faculty members or in the sense of carrying out joint projects. This provides an additional contribution to the studies. From now on, as a university, we will continue to make this contribution at the highest level. We are trying to make every contribution to TAI, the very important value of our country. We will continue after that. A unit of TAI is here, again on our campus. This unit is getting bigger. Recently, the number of personnel has doubled. The number will increase even more. In this sense, we will continue to contribute in every way with our faculty members, teachers and students. We thank TAI and our esteemed general manager for this close cooperation.”
