300 tons of chestnut honey has been produced in Zonguldak

Abdurrahman Canli, the president of Zonguldak Bee Farmers Association (ZAYBIR) stated that approximately 300 tons of chestnut honey has been produced this year and that the production is not only an economic contribution, but also a guarantee for people to continue their lives by owning their living spaces.

Canli held a meeting with the representatives of political parties and non-governmental organizations in Eregli and Alapli districts; the meeting was at the honey filling facility of ZAYBIR located in Oren District.

Canli emphasized that ZAYBIR is one of the associations that established in accordance with the animal breeding legislation for breeding purposes and that the association is inspected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, he said:

‘’ZAYBIR has 1300 members; this is the number of families producing honey for their own needs, a member is counted as a family. A thousand families do bee-keeping in Zonguldak; together with the unregistered, more than 2,500 families do beekeeping, send or sell honey to a neighbour or a relative outside the province. This situation is unknown; the reason why it is not known is our lack. I hope bee keeping will become known over time; at least we will be able to explain the work done in Zonguldak. ‘’

Canli emphasized that 1200 tons of honey should be produced annually, yet there is not enough capacity for this amount of production in Zonguldak, he said:

‘’ About 300 tons of chestnut honey has been produced this year. We sell chestnut honey for 170 liras. The production is not only an economic contribution, but also a guarantee for people to continue their lives by owning their living spaces. We also started bee breeding. We will return to our own bees if we get good results from bee breeding. Even if global warming cannot be resolved, we will not reduce our production below 600-700 tons; though we cannot reach our goal of 1200 tons.’’
