1915 Canakkale Bridge will be the most important link in the highway chain connecting Europe to Asia

The bridge, which is being built in harmony with the highway projects in the Marmara Region, will play an important role in the transition from one continent to another within the borders of Turkey.

The construction of the 1915 Canakkale Bridge, which will connect the European and Asian sides of the Canakkale Bogazi, continues with surface works after the completion of the “catwalk”.

According to the information received by the AA correspondent, the work of the teams involved in the construction of the bridge, which will take the title of “the world’s largest middle span suspension bridge” when it is put into service, with its color, figure, and other features, has accelerated with the catwalk.

Engineers, technicians, and workers continue their offshore work on the European and Asian sides of this road, which is the work platform that connects the two sides.

The giant structure will be connected to the Malkara-Canakkale Motorway and will be the most important part of the 101-kilometer route.

It will include the 1915 Canakkale Bridge and the motorway, 4 viaducts, 12 intersections, 55 bridges and overpasses, 40 underpasses, 238 culverts of various sizes, 4 highway service facilities, 2 maintenance operation centers, and 7 toll collection stations.

When the entire Kinali-Tekirdag-Canakkale-Savastepe Highway Project is connected to the Gebze-Izmir Highway, the rings of the motorway chain surrounding the Marmara Region will join. The bridge under construction in the Canakkale Bogazi will be included in this network as the most important link of the chain that will connect Europe to Asia, in other words Thrace to the south, to the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, within the borders of Turkey.

With the completion of the projects, it is aimed to reduce the ferry queues, especially during the summer months and public holidays, by creating alternative routes for transportation from Istanbul and Thrace provinces to the Marmara and Aegean regions.

In addition, it is envisaged to increase the cultural interaction as well as commercial relations with neighboring countries by reducing vehicle operating costs and travel times, reducing the time cost of goods carrying vehicles in import and export.

It is expected that the shortening of the distance with European countries will contribute to the development of the tourism sector, and the industry, trade, and service sectors in Thrace and Western Anatolia will gain further momentum.

Planned date for the opening: 18 March 2022

The two-foot span of the 1915 Canakkale Bridge, whose design was knitted with grace, was designed as 2023 meters, making sense with the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey.

Tower connections and elements of the bridge will be in red and white, referring to the Turkish flag. The upper part of the 333-meter-high towers on both sides will also be made to represent the cannonball that Seyit Onbasi dropped into the barrel during the Gallipoli Wars.

The total length of the first suspension bridge of the Canakkale will reach 4,608 meters, with a middle span of 2023 meters, side spans of 770 meters, and approach viaducts of 365 and 680 meters.

The deck of the bridge, which will serve with “2×3” lanes, will be 45.06 meters wide and 3.5 meters high. The walkways to be built on both sides of the deck will be used for maintenance and repair.

The bridge is planned to be put into service on March 18, 2022, which coincides with the 107th anniversary of the Canakkale Naval Victory.
